All Z3 models, engines, and variants
The Z3 was produced between dicember 1994 and july 2002. Several engines were available. The major change happened in 1999 when BMW decided to launch a restyling of the Z3. You will find here all the information of each model, before and after the restyling.

Mk2: from 07/1999 to 07/2002 (end of production)
In june 1999, the mk2 Z3 arrives. This major design change includes exterior (rear part, chrome ringed headlights) and interior (center console) modifications, as well as some mechanical and safety improvements. Those safety improvements give a modern touch to the Z3: a wider rear axle for improved stability, a three layer hood for better sound and temperature insulation, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)...
Enginewise, the range is now wider with the 1.9i, 2.0i, 2.2i, 2.5i (only USA), 2.8i (only until it was replaced by the 3.0i), 3.0i and 3.2 M S54 that will now have 325hp (315hp in USA).

1999:In May 1999, the 4 cylinder 1.9 with 118hp and the straight-6 2.0i with 150cv replace the 1.8 (115cv) and 1.9 (140cv) that become no longer available. For some reason, even if the 3.0i engine was largely used in other BMW cars, BMW decides to keep offering the 2.8i engine in the mk2 body for 1 year. (6/1999 to 6/2000). At the beginning of 2000, the 3.0i starts its production, and will gradually replace the 2.8 mk2. In USA, the 2.8 mk2 was sold under the name 2.5i, and developped 184hp.

Those two engines, together with the 2.8, are still considered to date as the most reliable engines ever made by BMW. 2001: As the production of the Z3 was about to come to an end, the M division decides to launch, early 2001, an upgrade of the M model, shoving the engine from the M3 E46, known as S54, under the hood. Due to the chassis limitations and the lenght of the exhaust, the new model will be limited to 325hp (originally 343hp in the M3). The result is a new sports car with a complete different engine from the S50. The S54 will be a very rare model, with very few units produced and sold (production data here). The production will stop only a year later, in july 2002, to make room for the Z4 in 2003.
